Gudi Padwa is the festival that is celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra month to mark the beginning of the Hindu new year. It is mainly celebrated in Maharashtra. The day is also celebrated as Ugadi, which is also known as Yugadi, is mainly a new year festival in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

One of the important food item on this festival is a paste of neem and jaggery. On this day, all houses are cleaned. People also make rangoli designs near their homes. They dress up in new clothes and enjoy family gatherings.

There are several stories also that are attached with this festival. On of them is “theory of creation”. It is also marked as the day when Lord Ram after defeating King Ravana in Lanka, returned to Ayodhya. As per belief, the long ‘Gudi’ symbolises victory and inspires people to prosper materially and spiritually.

On this day, women prepare sweets like ‘Puran Poli’ and ‘Shrikhand’ as also ‘Aambe daal’ and ‘Sunth Paak’. The day is also believed to be auspicious for ‘vaastu puja’ and opening new business establishments.

On this day, several processions are also taken out.

Gudi Padwa is observed in the month of Chaitra, according to the luni-solar calendar, and is considered an auspicious day that marks the New Year, celebrates the onset of spring and the reaping of Rabi crops. 

Maharashtrians celebrate the day by decorating their houses and also make colourful rangoli. A special Gudi flag, generally of yellow or red colour, is made and is garlanded with flowers, mango and neem leaves. 

It is topped with upturned silver or copper vessel signifying victory and achievement. Gudi is believed to ward off evil, invite prosperity and good luck into the house.
